Bodegas Alto Moncayo, Moncayo, Campo de Borja 2013
This wine is your significant other, therapist and security guard all in one. Alto Moncayo is 100% Grenache that is rich, full bodied, dark with a finish that hangs, and hangs and hangs. Aged in 100% new French oak for 20 months, this wine explodes with aromas and flavors of black raspberry, blackberry and licorice with balanced, integrated oak. We strongly suggest a two to three hour decant time if you plan to enjoy this wine soon but the best play is to cellar Alto Moncayo for at least three to four years.
The fruit source for Alto Moncayo comes from windswept foothills of an extinct (we hope) volcano in the region of Campo de Borja, 500 meters above sea level. The youngest vines were planted in 1967 and the oldest part of the vineyard was planted in 1910. Made by winemaker Chris Ringland. 16% alc. Just 900 cases produced.
We first learned of Alto Moncayo years ago and believe us; it's about as sought after as a winning Powerball lottery ticket. World famous wine critic Robert Parker has already given the 2007 and 2009 vintages of Alto Moncayo perfect, 100 point scores and said the wines were the greatest examples of old vine Grenache that anyone could desire. And not to dismiss the 2005 and 2011 vintages, Parker gave those wines respective ratings of 95 points. These wines might not be for everyone, but to us, one sip and the velvet ropes part and you're whisked away toward a level of luxury that truly has its own place.
