Barrel & Ink, Thief, Red Wine, Sonoma County 2013
Winemaker Pax Mahle is one of those guys who could likely excel at anything and is loved by many. He just happens to make some of the best dang, get-the-heck-out-of-here, shut-the-front-door wines anywhere. Pax hit the main stage years ago with his eponymous label wines and it's been all biscuits and gravy since. The Thief is a steal of a blend of 84% Syrah and 16% Grenache from Sonoma County. Pax thrives on making wines from the more rugged vineyard sites or from vines facing exposure to harsh elements (Spoiler alert-the best wines come from vines that have to work and strive hard for water and nutrients within the soils they're planted in). When we first tasted The Thief, we were robbed of breath but quickly recovered in time to smell and taste the concentrated notes of flowers, pepper, spice and rich yet balanced red and black fruits. Before you know it, your glass will be empty, the bottle will run dry and you'll be in quite the pickle; call and order more or chalk it up to a one night stand that you'll remember for a long time. 14.1% alc. Only 175 cases produced.
