Pavi, Montepulciano, Napa Valley 2013
The first conversation we ever had with Rob Lawson was not about wine, if you can believe that. Rob is a Duke University grad so we had to talk a little hoops and what it's like to be with the Cameron Crazies before we got to discussing his talents and love of winemaking. Rob's known locally for his fantastic, small lot Cabernet Sauvignon wines but what's really getting our attention is the non (California) traditional varietals he's producing these days. Lucky for all of us, Rob's mastery of winemaking translates to just about any type of grape on the planet.
We love this wine for its Italian accent with a little Napa Valley charm. It's big with firm tannins and drinks like your current, favorite book in front of a fire on a cold, winter night. It delivers dark, black fruits and leans toward plum flavors with a hint of cocoa bean. The longer the wine is open, the better it gets so you'll have to show some patience in not glug-glug-glugging the bottle in record time. 14.5% alc. Only 225 cases produced.
