Sutro, Warnecke Ranch, Merlot, Alexander Valley-Sonoma County 2013
Proprietors Eliot and Alice Sutro have family roots in the bay area that go all the way back to the 1850s. Both have very colorful pasts and skills that cover everything from museum docent to mandolin playing to fly fishing. Yet, both were eventually drawn to winemaking and it was only recently that they starting making enough wine to share with those outside of family and friends.
Sutro's prized block of Merlot runs along the ridge that goes from Chalk Hill to the Russian River, a steeply terraced vineyard stretching down towards the lake on Warnecke Ranch, the family property. The first Sutro Merlot blend was produced six years ago. A handful of these unlabeled bottles are still traded among and coveted by friends and family. The 2013 vintage is a blend of 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, all estate fruit. Sutro exudes aromatic and textural elegance. This wine would ruffle Duckhorn's feathers after just one sip. Aged in both French and Hungarian oak, Sutro will convert any Merlot naysayer, seduce the Napa Valley elite and make all who enjoy good, California red wine stand up and applaud. 14.5% alc. Only 75 cases produced.
